Catherine Wilson
Catherine graduated from Ballet Divertimento in 2015 and has since committed herself to nurturing her own contemporary dance practice. She regularly participates in Circuit-Est classes and workshops in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, New York, and Berlin. Among these, there are notable experiences with Transformation Danse, Domaine Forget with RubberbandDance Group, Vim Vigor, and B12. As an enterprising individual, in 2018 she initiated a choreographic commission with Andrea Peña for a piece involving 5 performers, including Catherine herself. This project received financial support from Carrefour Jeunesse-Emploi and the Conseil des arts de Montréal and was presented at the ZH Festival in 2019, with an alternative version at the Quartiers Danses Festival in 2020. Catherine also collaborated with Daina Ashbee and Sarah Manya for a solo performance in 2019.
In 2020, during her selection for the Noublood pre-incubator program, Catherine initiated her multidisciplinary collective, Motio, with bgirl Sarah Buono-Fredette and stylist and artistic director Ryme Zahzam. In September 2022, they received a research grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, allowing them to complete their first creative residency for their piece "Ecchymoses de l’eau" in Gaspésie. In addition to this, Catherine was hired by the ZemmourBallet company for their new creation, "L’Enfer d’un monde." The company performed the piece at the Contemporary Dance Festival in Sherbrooke and the Quartiers Danses Festival in the summer of 2022. She also collaborated with emerging choreographer Naomi Gwynn on the "Seven" project since the winter of 2022. This piece, presented at the Fringe Festival in 2022, received the award for best choreography. After a residency at Danse à la carte obtained in the winter of 2023, the piece was reworked and performed at the Contemporary Dance Festival in Sherbrooke in the summer of 2023.
Currently, Catherine is focusing on "Entre|Nos," a collaboration with Olivia Jaen Flores for the creation of the solo "Et si nos chemins s’entrelacent?" in addition to developing a movement practice unique to them.
Throughout each project Catherine undertakes, she seeks to establish collaborative working methods that deviate from established hierarchical structures. She defines herself by her eternally curious nature and her advocacy for socio-political themes, which drive her as a performer, creator, and project initiator. Her creations, characterized by powerful and chaotic movements, allow her to express her bewilderment and wonderment in the face of the current world.
