Geneviève Lauzon

A dancer, choreographer and teacher, Geneviève completed a bachelor's degree in contemporary dance at UQAM, and continues to perfect her skills through workshops with renowned choreographers including Frédérick Gravel, Isabelle Van Grimde and international artists. From 2013 to 2019, she joined the Sursaut Dance Company, whose works for young audiences have led her to perform across Canada and internationally. A versatile artist, she also collaborates with choreographers Julie Lebel (Foolish Operations), Philippe Meunier and Ian Yaworski (Les Archipels), Marie-Pier Gilbert and Julie Tymchuk (Projet HELMUT), Philippe Dandonneau and Gabrielle B.-Lehouillier, on stage and in situ projects. She has performed works combining contemporary dance, urban dance, contemporary gigue, jazz and theatrical dance on a number of Montreal stages, including Tangente Danse, Festival Quartiers Danses, ZH Festival, Phenomena, Vue sur la relève and Tangente Danse Buissonnière.

As a choreographer, Geneviève is interested in in situ art; she has begun to reflect on the relationship to both the space and the audience, which she puts forward in her projects, including the duet Moi | ioT presented in Quebec and France (Jouer Dehors, Festival Quartiers Danses, Maison du Québec à St-Malo). She is currently pursuing this in situ approach with À l'aube d'un geste, an interactive installation punctuated by dance performances, and Connexions Momentanées (in collaboration with Marie-Pier Gilbert), a gathering ambulatory show featuring live music and the creative essence of several dancers. Since 2019, these works have been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, enabling several performances across Montreal and throughout the province. In 2022, Geneviève collaborated with Claire Jeannot to create the multidisciplinary work Jardins Suspendus, a major site-specific creation combining contemporary dance, aerial dance, sound installation and cultural mediation. Supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the National Theatre School of Canada, this Quartiers des spectacles-commissioned project allowed street art to shine for a week in downtown Montreal, attracting crowds of over 400 people for the eight performances. In 2023, her expertise in in situ dance led her to join the Board of Directors of the Regroupement des arts de rues du Québec as Vice-President, with the aim of developing support and recognition for this artistic discipline.

Geneviève has 20 years of experience as a dance teacher in a variety of contexts. She also specializes in coordinating and creating choreography for large-scale events involving hundreds of participants (Just for Laughs Festival, Montreal's 375th anniversary, National Holiday Parade). Geneviève works with several vocal troupes (Les petits chanteurs de Laval, L'ensemble vocal les Enchanteurs, Choeur Gai de Montréal, Opéra Bouffe du Québec) as a choreographer and sometimes stage director, using creative work as an educational tool to democratize dance through another artistic medium.
